At 50-game mark, Nationals have reason to jump for joy
Behind power and execution at the plate and a suddenly successful pitching tandem, the Nats secured their best 50-game record since 2018
There’s a particular significance to the 50-game mark in Nationals history, as any longtime observer can tell you. It’s the point at which the 2019 club bottomed out at 19-31 before deciding to go on a remarkable run for the next 129 games, the last of which ended with the hoisting of the franchise’s first World Series trophy.
These Nationals probably aren’t going to conclude the 2026 season in that fashion. But 50 games in, they are unquestionably in a better position that than championship roster of the prior generation was.
Tonight’s 8-4 victory over the Mets propelled them back to the .500 mark, proving this team can indeed lose a couple of tough games and then bounce right back and win a couple more. And the manner in which they dispatched their shockingly underperforming division rivals suggested they are – at this moment – the better team.
