The Nationals took live batting practice inside their spring training ballpark for the first time. Plus, some rehab updates on DJ Herz, Jarlin Susana, Travis Sykora and Trevor Williams.
Yeah not questioning the why on the roster move, I just was not understanding Mark’s statement that Herz being placed on the 60 day IL guaranteed he was out till late May.
Nice to get these daily updates about what the team is doing. The more I hear, the more I like the new leadership of management, coaches and player development staff. It also sounds like the players are responding in a very positive way. This could get pretty exciting this year!
If been wondering about the Hawkeye system. It felt like a disadvantage that the Nats and Astros didn't have it in their home park. It's especially vital now that they all have to learn the challenge system.
Brand new Metro escalators at the 1/2 Street Navy Yard entrance are almost done, April is almost here; stick a chili dog on the grill for me. I'm ready!!
Same here. I thought Susana would be competing for a spot in the rotation right out of camp. And even when they seem healthy they usually need another six months recovery time. Every injury these days is an odyssey as nothing is simple and always filled with intrepidation.
Well, the item below was written back in December and shows that the likelihood of Susana doing anything going into 2026 were slim. And I'm sure they'll be super cautious going forward.
At best, maybe later this season?
"...but then had season-ending lat surgery in September and his status for Spring Training is in question. Injuries aside, he’s still only 21 and can certainly be a big part of the Nationals rotation later in 2026, most likely in 2027 though..."
I’m not terribly fluent in IL rules; why isn’t Herz’s placement on the 60 day retroactive to last year?
Granted, he’s unlikely to pitch till mid-season at best due to the usual TJ timeline…
each year is it's different animal if you will. everyone starts fresh.
because they need the roster spot now

60 day clock starts on Opening Day. He'll be eligible to return no earlier than Memorial Day.
Rosters reset after the WS. Can only protect 40 players in the offseason, regardless of injury status.
That's the right answer. Thanks!
I wish I was in Florida instead of looking at the snowcrete still lingering everywhere.
Loving the two-a-days, Mark!
I'm really looking forward to seeing what Susana looks like by the second half of the season!
Have all my ST tickets in hand. Can't watch to get on that Florida bound plane.
Awesome coverage, Mark. Hitting it out of the park daily!
Oh, my Lord!

GO NATS!!

I’m surprised about Susana. I thought he was healthy coming into spring training.
