Game 114: Nats at Phillies
Andrew Alvarez will be on the mound and Abimelec Ortiz will be in the lineup as the post-trade-deadline Nationals face Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA – Apologies for how late this is getting published. With the trade deadline today, the Nationals didn’t announce their lineup until after 6 p.m. And the Paul Toboni met with reporters over Zoom to discuss the trade of Foster Griffin to the Guardians for four prospects, as well as the organization’s overall approach to the deadline.
The end result of all that: The Nats and Phillies are now underway here at Citizens Bank Park, and there are several roster moves. Abimelec Ortiz has been recalled from Triple-A and will become the left-handed half of the Nats’ first base platoon, replacing Luis Garcia Jr. It’s a golden opportunity for the 24-year-old acquired in the MacKenzie Gore trade and owner of an .845 OPS in 85 games at Rochester.
The Nationals also have recalled Andrew Alvarez, and the left-hander is starting tonight’s series opener. He takes the spot that opened up when Riley Cornelio was optioned after Sunday’s game in Atlanta. Whether Alvarez is here to stay remains to be seen.
And once the Griffin trade was officially announced, the club added reliever Yovanny Cruz (who was acquired in yesterday’s Garcia deal) to the active roster.

I wish to have the level of faith in myself that Toboni has in Vivas and Tena.
If we’re going to stop having Brady House be something in this organization, then let’s stop pretending he is and come out and say it.
If there’s no faith he can hit righties, how do you want him to learn how to hit righties when he’s sitting against guys like Nola?
I’m fine with him not being a future piece, I’m not entirely attached to him, but we can’t expect the guy to learn when he doesn’t get a shot.
