Rooting for another loss today to effectuate "regime change" .. I know a lot of you guys (and gals) are secretly hoping for Nats to lose from here on out... I am just doing it openly, and somewhat shamelessly. You can cuss me out.. Go right ahead..

is1human's avatar

What kind of regime change are you after? If you think the owners are more likely to sell the team if they lose then wouldn’t it work the opposite way? Presumably winning would increase the sale price

CJ from VA's avatar

Sell the team chants will eventually get so loud that the Lerners have to sell the team and perhaps lower their ask. Only way that happens is if we lose badly enough. If we are average team, then maybe people are not so opposed to Lerners keeping the ownership. The bad press and pure hatred spewed at the Lerners will eventually be hard to ignore. Isn't that what happened with the Redskins / Commanders? Eventually Dan Snyder had to sell it. It just got too much. Look at the team now. They are doing great.

is1human's avatar

That didn’t work in Pittsburgh or Oakland

CJ from VA's avatar

Case and point.. Those team still suck.. So either Lerners can keep doing what they are doing and have inferior product or wise up and sell the team... We at least can collectively wish for a loss...That's the least we can do; that's the most we can do.

gonatsgo1's avatar

I have no insight or info not available to you but one thing I can guarantee. The Lerners will make NO business decisions based on public/press pressure. Good or bad, it ain't happening.

Max Patkin's avatar

As was the case yesterday, your command of facts is... shaky. Logic doesn't seem to be your friend. ;)

If you want the Lerners to sell, root for success. They purchased the team for $450M; today, as it stands, the franchise is worth about $2.15B. That's a "B", as in BILLION. And that's a franchise in the midst of its 7th consecutive losing season. It's worth more than 4x what they paid even in the midst of continued failure. So they are playing with house money.

Lets say T-Bone and Butters turn the Nats into a consistent winner. That drives the value up. They'd be more inclined to sell then -- before the value drops. Buy low, sell high (the stock market folks call that sound logic!).

If you want them to sell, you should hope they succeed. If you still insist on saying silly things devoid of logic, we'll recognize you're really just a troll and tune you out. But I don't think anyone will "cuss you out". So far the silly arguments you make are so inane as to create amusement, not anger.

CJ from VA's avatar

Before you question my logic.. How about this.. What if they keep losing and the price keeps on falling....Today they can get $2.2 B.. But a year later say only $1.7 B... A year after the $1.5 B... Is it possible for them to say at some point that they want to get out of this business.. They've already made enough money..

It doesn't look like you've ever invested in the stock market. You don't have to always sell at the highest point to make profit.. You can sell when the price pulls back and still make a profit as long as you are selling at price more than you bought it for.

In what world do you see an MLB franchise losing value over time? The argument for the team to lose is flat out wrong.

CJ from VA's avatar

It the same world that no one thought real estate could lose value back in 2005-2006.. That level of hubris is not good.. It's quite delusional actually.

Max Patkin's avatar

Lol. Guess how many major sports franchises have lost value over the last 10 years. Over the last 20? Exactly ZERO. Feel free to look it up. In fact, maybe look stuff up BEFORE you say it out loud here. 🤣

As for me, I live exclusively on my stock portfolio. Despite being retired for many years before I'm eligible to collect Social Security, my portfolio is worth more now than when I retired. So... I don't think I'll be seeking your input on my investments based on your tenuous grasp of how markets -- and the value of sports franchises -- work. 😉

Spot on, Max. The latest rejoinder even invoked the "D" word - altho not apparently as part of their intended argument. Go figure.

Well that's quite a different lineup than we're used to seeing. More of a traditional one, with Chaparro-Ortiz-House in the heart of the order. Let's see if it works.

Staying positive and optimistic, and not feeding the trolls. 😎

This is the lineup that goes undefeated in September

BassMan's avatar

Shaking the lineup in the circumstances isn't such a bad idea. I continue to root for my team. I remember not having one for 33 years.

Appreciate the positivity. The trolls shall be ignored here too.

"...Staying positive and optimistic, and not feeding the trolls..."

Speaking of which, uh, them, I've taken a bit of a hiatus since Sunday's debacle. Yeah, I've posted but pretty much avoided game threads. Going back and re-reading during the week I saw some doozies. Always amazing how (you know who you are) only come out of when things aren't going well. Cue Seinfeld: who are these people?

Anyway, my break is over. Let's go Nats!

There's no denying the team isn't as fun to watch as it was until about a week before the trade deadline. It's essentially back to rebuild mode, which requires some mental readjustment, especially given how long it was in rebuild mode.

But I see a big difference. This is a temporary setback made worse by Wood's and now CJ's injuries. On the other hand the pitching is now trending in the right direction, and I view this "rebuild" as more of a temporary bump in the road than a continuation of endless losing. There looks to be a lot of help coming up in the farm that didn't seem to be there before, and the future still is trending up in my opinion - but certainly understand why others wouldn't share that opinion.

So root, root, root for the home team. If they don't win, it's a shame.

Definition of Dogs Days of Summer. Go Nats.

Kevin Vanhutton's avatar

That’s a tough schedule. Doesn’t the league have some kind of rule about earlier game times on getaway days?

This is not a line up ITS A SURRENDER WHAT INSANITY SAYS BAT THIS GANG OF MISFIT TOYS BOOOOOTHERA IS NOT SERIOUS HE IS A FRAUD IF HE IS TRYING TO SELL THIS REAL ESTATE WITH NO MONEY DOWN GARBAGE

Geezy Peezy. These comments are blistering. C'mon, folks!

Yes, the team is in bad shape without Abrams and Wood. What I don't get, what I really don't get, is why Seaver King--who is just killing it in AAA, he has nothing left to prove--is still in Rochester and Vivas is playing second.

That seems ridiculous, and I don't care about the potential lockout. Give King MLB experience and give the lineup some hope.

peter wood's avatar

Relax Dave:)) This season is what it is. King is not gonna change it much in one month.

DaveTheSwede's avatar

I agree….but he looks like a starter next year so I’d love to see him get his feet wet this year

If Vivas is part of our future…..ugh

Refresh my memory, somebody. What are the current rules for roster expansion at Sept 1st? We could use the help & get some early looks for 2027. No, I'm not QUITE giving up on this season, more like just exploring options going forward. Plus, I hate the Fish anyways, like most of us here.

MacMom54's avatar

We’re in that weird time when the reality of the post- trade lineup has hit us like a freight train. But the excitement of watching prospects during call ups and feeling all gooey and hopeful inside isn’t quite here yet. Win or lose, I always find something intriguing to watch. Chappy/Abi, House’s development, Nunez defense. Please, fish, hit it to JY. I’ll watch that all day long.
