That’s a result of the ridiculous MLB “win” rules where the starter has to go 5 innings, but a reliever only has to be in when his team goes ahead. And Cavalli has struggled at times to get to 5 innings.
The entire concept that an individual pitcher "wins" or "loses" a game is losing almost all meaning with openers, bulk pitchers, starters not going past 5 innings, and multiple bullpen innings and pitchers the norm.
One could argue it was always nonsense concocted by sports writers looking to sell papers by assigning credit and blame because they couldn’t think of other ways to tell stories
Yeah, described in The Official Rules, Section 10, the "Official Scorer."
The interesting provision is sub-part that indicates if starter does not go five that the reliever who "pitched most effectively" gets the win. This sometimes results in a pitcher not getting the W when he's pitching when the team gains and retains the lead.
I'd be happy with a rainout announced before the game starts. With a 1pm game tomorrow, waiting to near midnight for rain to clear isn't needed. The Brewers are coming to town and have to have payback on their mind, and a rested Nats squad would be advantageous.
I am hoping for a Nat's victory if they get the game in and a rainout if it is going to end late into the night/early morning. Either way, you know me: GO NATS!!!
So the offense has plummeted in the last few games - how much of that is muscle memory kicking in as fatigue builds up and overwhelms the thinking part of the brain that’s trying to implement the new hitting approach? Until it becomes second nature, you’d think the new process is vulnerable in players who grew up under a different set of rules for offense…
Looking at some radar projections, it looks like they will get hammered with extended rain around 9:30. With the 1pm start tomorrow, one would hope that if that is the case, they would probably have a legal game reached, and should just call it rather than waiting to try to get the rest of the 9 in.
One of three things can happen with the Nationals tonight, win, lose, rainout ⚾️⚾️⚾️🙋🏼♀️
I bet RAINOUT
no vivas in the lineup makes me happy. the only nats position player i outright don’t like.
Although he's generally pitched well, I was surprised to note that Cavalli is stil looking for his first W.
He's mostly been the victim of really dead bats -- in three of his five starts he gave up only 1 run! In the other two he gave up 3 and 4.
Gore-itis.
These days I call it being DeGrommed.

W-L record as a measure of pitcher effectiveness is on the road to extinction anyway with the direction baseball is going.
Let's hope so.
Regardless, they are 1-5 in games Cavalli has started (two extra-inning losses, though).

Yep, it's a meaningless stat these days.

Well, up until about 25 years ago, complete games were fairly common, so it kinda made sense. Now, not at all.

See 10.19(c) 1.
I believe that did happen in a Nats game a few weeks ago.
Don't be surprised if the high win total on this staff is something like 6.
Why:
- Innings minimum to qualify
- Terrible bullpen
Let's just hope for a more competitive game, and please, no errors guys.

I would love have a rainout tonight, as I am planning to go tomorrow and would really enjoy some bonus baseball!
Looking at the radar this does not look promising tonight

As I've written in other ways before - as goes Wood and Abrams, so goes the offense.
I guess that’s who I have in mind with my question

Looks like they'll at least start on time.
No "Delayed Start" notices up.
We are underway on a 53-degree Wednesday night in Flushing. The rain is supposed to arrive sometime between 8-9 p.m.
Already coming down, Mark.
CJ RBI off the lefty! Great start, boys.
C.J. came through. House on the other hand strikes out on 3 pitches.
Good things happen when you put the ball in play.
I mean, no way this game is happening right, I’m surprised they let the half inning start
