The comments about this he changes by Butera and Toboni were actually pretty candid and realistic. But no mention about why Chapparo who I think has proven he is not a major league 1B. That is the change that doesn’t make sense. Also - after Schultz’s meltdown and obvious unavailability- I expected them to swap him out.

Dave Nemec's avatar

I mean, the only available relievers at AAA are Granillo and Fernandez, and Schultz is better than both of them.

Mark's avatar

In that case. Agreed.

The nats seem to have a short leash with Chapparo, and sometimes I wonder if his hitting suffers because of it. But his fielding is awful, so I wonder how long he will stay. All in all a poor fielding infield. I suppose i could use stronger language there.

Very surprised, but also very pleased, to hear JY was not more seriously hurt. But then, who knows what was in the shot they gave him.... (jk)

Ballplayers are just built different, I guess. Bone bruises -- and I would think he has one since he was hit in the ribs -- are so nasty and can take forever to heal, as I know only too well.

cipherlockinexile's avatar

I wrote in the previous chat that I had a very bad rib contusion that was very painful and lasted a while. But I was never a pro quality athlete.

Susan V's avatar

Ouch. I've never done that to a rib but I have one on my shin at the moment and it's sure taking its sweet time healing.

cipherlockinexile's avatar

Sorry to hear that. Hope it gets better soon!

Susan V's avatar

Thank you! I'm sure it will, eventually.

My guess is lidocaine.

Susan V's avatar

Cortisone wouldn't do much for a bone, I don't think. But lidocaine would.

Chaparro was a surprise and not what I'd hoped. My kingdom for a *real* third baseman.

Freakin' weather delay.

Been through many of these down here. Let's hope they don't hold this too long.

All I see is sun.

cipherlockinexile's avatar

These threat of rain delays are really stupid when it's due to pop-up thunderstorms in the area. There's no way to know whether they will ever happen at your location or not. Now a line of thunderstorms associated with a front barreling toward a location is different. Then it makes sense.

Mark Zuckerman's avatar

Well, the start of this game has been delayed due to the threat of rain. There's a storm cell to the west that might hit us, so they're not taking any chances and waiting for it to pass.

GLH aka NatsFan4Ever's avatar

Smart move rather than warming up Griffin, only to have him pitch an inning or so and then cool off due to a delay.

At least some explanation of “why not Morales?” Developing confidence longer term at the plate I’m sure is part of it but I bet they don’t want to say (1) he may be a big option at first and (2) needs to work on the glove more and don’t want to make Luis feel too bad by emphasizing the first point. With Brady in Rochester at third now he sure won’t be getting any run over there (I don’t think he’s been playing there much but I really don’t know/I know in Spring Training he mostly was learning first…)

nats1fan's avatar

I like Louie but have not been impressed with his first base work. He was better at second. Not sure why that was the move for him. Can someone clarify this for me?

John walker's avatar

He proved he was a butcher at second and I think they’ thought they’d see if at least as a stopgap they could get some utility out of him at first. Fail…

nats1fan's avatar

He's just not very good there and it's a shame.

John walker's avatar

Agree all around. At -7 outs above average at second last year he was sort of the poor man’s CJ (who was -11 0AA). Good hitter and power for a middle infielder — but not so much at a corner position. And since defense up the middle usually of the building block fundamentals, he and CJ both a real conundrum — but CJ’s offense likely enough to tolerate the shoddy D…

nats1fan's avatar

Like CJ but he aggravates me more than anyone else on the team. Seems like loads of potential but arrogant. Don't he's too keen on listening.

John walker's avatar

Agree again completely. I keep hoping it is a maturity issue cured by aging but fear it is a personality trait.

Nice one, Tena

First time I don’t like the quotes from Toboni and Butera. Was Crews the right call when Franklin is doing better? Was Chaparro the right one? With Ortiz and Morales doing great. I hope I’m wrong, they are much more prepared than me

Jay Bryant's avatar

So let's suppose that a month from now, YoYo continues to rake and House has responded as well or better than you hoped he would, Assume that Mead goes back to first, where he belongs, and Chapparo goes to Rochester (likewise). We then would have four third basemen, two of whom (House and Morales) would be candidates for the long-term solution there. Of the other two, Vivas is performing well, and Tena is hitting the cover off the ball, although nobody seems to think much of his defensive skills. Pretty complex decision for a kid manager to make, especially if we keep hanging around the edges of the wild card race. We obviously need better pitching to make that a goal worth chasing. But how to get it, and from where?

nebco66's avatar

This is pure guess, but here goes... I listen to Toboni, and I hear someone who isn't sold on Morales. Someone else's guy (Rizzo). I think they're going to keep Morales at Rochester and sell high for pitching help. Crews's numbers weren't better than Morales's, but here Crews is. I wonder if the new regime is committed to the old regime's choices and decisions. Just wondering... Hard to move on from Crews. Too high a pick.

GLH aka NatsFan4Ever's avatar

He is not a kid manager at all. Look at the moves he make and the way the guys trust and respect him.

Dave Nemec's avatar

I agree. He's managing this team very well. Not indicative of a rookie manager.

peter wood's avatar

Yup!! He has impressed me a lot.

Jay Bryant's avatar

I quite agree - he is very impressive. I probably should have stifled my tendency to use snarky language. The decision I refer to is a hard one for any manager, not just a youthful one. My apologies.

7:30 is first pitch.

Tarp coming off!!

Update: The game will start at 7:30 p.m.

Chaparro is up to create room for Morales and House development … and they need that time. If you take the cake out of the oven too soon it collapses. The Nats need a right handed 1b option and Chaparro fills that need for the moment (brutal defense aside).

I hope we get to keep Abram’s but the 2027 infield could be completely different from tonight’s. Develop first. Play later.

It seems clear this management team is thinking long term … and that benefits the players as well as the long term prospects of the team. It’s not wrong. It’s brave.

GLH aka NatsFan4Ever's avatar

Unfortunately, I think it will be 2028 with the dang work stoppage looming for 2027. Hope they can figure it out and come to a new agreement, but it does not sound likely.

GLH aka NatsFan4Ever's avatar

I just want a CURLY W tonight, no matter how they get there!

Mark Zuckerman's avatar

Nats and Mets are underway after a 45-minute delay. It's 87 muggy degrees, but dry.

cipherlockinexile's avatar

Not a good start. Sigh.
