This will be interesting, I feel like historically the Nats have been dominated by rookie pitchers making their debut. Much like the Commanders historically make rookie opposing QBs look like hall of famers. I have no data to back this claim up.

Very interesting how they stacked the lineup with lefties. I haven't seen Painter but this makes me think he either doesn't have a changeup or his changeup is his worst pitch. Whereas his slider is probably pretty good (thus no House).

He certainly has had more trouble with lefties having given up a .857 OPS against last year in the minors. Seems to either walk them, K them or give up hard contact. Need to see some plate discipline from Luis to get on base for CJ.

I’m curious what Vivas has to offer defensively. House has been mostly solid.

Lefty-Lefty-Lefty-Lefty-Lefty-Switch-Lefty-Righty-Righty. This could be a very difficult 1st inning for the Philthies young righty

I'm surprised. I always thought Phillies fans to be more knowledgeable than to panic after only four games. Even if they are playing one of the worsts teams in the league.

You sure you are talking about the same Philadelphia the fans there are the most vile of all the ones not Mets and Braves fans

As someone who grew up in the Philly area in the '70s and early '80s, this is not at all uncommon.

It's also fun to watch. 😄

I grew up there in the 60's -70's. Exactly the same!

Never would've thought we'd have a must-watch game on a March Tuesday.

Cubs fans were anxious that their two losses to us might potentially cost them a wild card berth.

Philly fans do not lack baseball knowledge....they embrace the boo. The whole brotherly love thing. They will boo their players, they will boo your players. And they will boo their own brother. It's kind of an act of affection ... you know. ... brotherly love.

. . . and famously, Santa Claus!

The only people who overreact more than Philly fans are Baltimore fans. My contempt for them is equal

How about these lineups with both Tena and Vivas!

Eddie Stanky used to have an opener, sometimes for just one batter! just for the purpose of having most of the opposing bats in his favor once he brought in his normal starter. It was a nice trick and I wondered why other teams didn't do it (just to keep opposing lineups from overloading with lefties, for example).

Also, every day we see how much the Toboni-Butera era has bettered the same group of guys who were left traumatized by the previous regime. I mean, that double steal wasn't even close yesterday.

if the Phillies score "fewer" runs than the Nationals tonight they’ll lose

😶🐞⚾️🙋🏼‍♀️

The general rule is you use "fewer" for things you can count, and "less" for things you cannot count, e.g. fewer French fries, but less mashed potatoes.

As one of my best friends would say, I hope we don't make Painter look like a Cy Young contender. The Nats have a rather unpleasant history of making a rookie pitcher look like Max Scherzer.

GLH aka NatsFan4Ever's avatar

That was then. This is now!

Well, this is why I'm a dumb yokel fan and not a manager making four or five million. If Brady House is not handling third tonight, sure makes sense to use his big bat at DH, rather than jose Tena, the singles hitter, great that he may be at that. Oh well.

Mayble the singles hitter bats in some runs

natsclop's avatar

I’m willing to eat my hat in predicting House is a late game substitution. By all accounts it seems Butera wants to make Painter uncomfortable fast, force a rookie to prove he can pitch against the matchups.

Martin Niland's avatar

Blake is pretty sharp so far with the matchups. Last year’s team was left handed, too, but the results this year seem better so far.

gonatsgo1's avatar

Interested in seeing Painter pitch. Several seasons back he was a "can't miss" Phillies prospect (he may have even been their #1) but never panned out. Now he's back.

And the Nats line up? Butera spins the wheel again. -:)

I don’t know what’s going to happen, 60-65-70-75 wins… but one thing is sure: Davey Martinez was a very bad manager, and the 1-0 everyday it’s not only on the players, it’s also in the manager (above all in a very young team) Going 1-0 everyday means take care of all the little things a profesional have to: lineups, matchups, analytics, coaching, confidence, giving resources to the players…
