Noted that Dylan Crews is still out of lineup

McMerc7MHDC's avatar

Injury-related, most likely.

peter wood's avatar

It does not matter. He has not yet learned how to hit MLB pitching.

LEE MCDOWELL's avatar

Cut the guy some slack, man. I have notice an improvement just in the last couple series. Took me awhile and some correction from within the group here. He IS learning.

dcNatz's avatar

He just needs an aluminum bat and he’ll be fine. 😂

Dave Nemec's avatar

Agree. He’s got a better approach this time around.

peter wood's avatar

You are correct, he has improved a bit. But for his pedigree and #2 draft pick it is kinda frustrating seeing him struggle for so long.

Richard Boriskin's avatar

Is Crews out due to the hit on his hand the other day?

Ed Lawson's avatar

It could be a lefty/right thing. Tena bats left.

Doug Herbert's avatar

Yes, Butera said his hand swelled up after being hit on Saturday. If he isn't ready by tomorrow, you have to wonder if they won't go ahead and put him on the IL. I'm sure they'd hate to have his return to the majors made more difficult by fighting through a hand injury.

Hopefully they can beat Miami. Miami seems to be the one divisional rival they struggle with, no matter what the records are.

Time to pay the Fish back for winning a series that Nats should’ve won (were right there to do so).

John walker's avatar

As frustrating as being a Nats fan has been, being a Miami fan has to be tougher: not only did ownership blow up both championship teams after winning the Series but people forget the team was on the verge of being very special in like 2016 when Jose Fernandez (the heart of the team who just owned the Nats, among many many others) killed himself mid-season in a boating accident. And at the time the Miami outfield was Yelich, Stanton and Ozuna, with a young Realmuto catching and batting title winner Dee

Gordon at second. Can’t remember other players or pitchers, but that core really formidable, and after Jose’s death team was blown up again and they’ve been playing in a forlorn “atmosphere” ever since…

Imagine you mean Marlins 2b Dee Strange-Gordon, rather than Yankees HOF 2b Joe Gordon.

2b or not 2b, that is the question.

John walker's avatar

Right you are! And due to your smart observation, was able to fix it just now! A quirky “thank you” fact for you: Ted Williams was not MVP in either of his Triple Crown seasons (‘42 or ‘47) nor in his .406 year (‘41), losing in ‘42 to Joe Gordon and the other two years to DiMaggio. Yankees won pennant all 3 years and Dimaggio’s hitting streak was in ‘41, but still…

Dee Strange-Gordon who was with the Nats in '22. His last year in baseball.

Well realize that that was 4 ownership groups. First guy built a WS champion then tore it down and sold the team, second guy rebuilt the farm but then sold the team in a hurry so that he could buy the Red Sox instead. Third guy used the rebuilt farm to win the second WS, but didnt have the cash to pay for extensions so he traded away stars rather than resign them. Then eventually had to sell the team to the current group who in 8 seasons is still trying to make them financially viable.

John walker's avatar

Good background! I don’t think it eased the fans’ pain any to know it was a series of 4 owners that did it…

NME's avatar

And that's the challenge the current ownership has. They have a very fractured trust with the city's fanbase they need to repair, but at the same they can't constantly subsidize the team and be able to afford to keep it.

“when Jose Fernandez (the heart of the team who just owned the Nats, among many many others) killed himself mid-season in a boating accident.”

Fernandez was indeed killed in an alcohol related high speed boating accident, but I don’t think there was any indication that he “killed himself” as it being suicidal.

John walker's avatar

By “killed himself” I certainly didn’t mean to imply it was suicide rather than idiocy…

Couple of injury updates for you:

Dylan Crews (R hand) took a full round of BP today and said he feels no pain. Blake Butera said he’ll be available off the bench tonight (especially if Miami uses a lefty reliever) and will be in the lineup tomorrow.

Jake Irvin still has not been cleared to throw. Butera said the righty’s shoulder has felt better as he’s progressed through exercises but acknowledged the process hasn’t gone as quickly as they initially believed it would.

LEE MCDOWELL's avatar

I sure hope you are correct about the Irvin thing.

Why is it that whenever I go to the park expecting a pitchers duel I end up witnessing a slug fest? Guess it’ll be alright as long as we end with a W!

-Why not us!

gonatsgo1's avatar

I knew our days much above .500 have been limited but never knew the last time we were 3 games over was at the end of 2019. <gulp>.

We’ve taken a couple of steps forward, don’t be shocked to see one step back

Much like the Three Stooges 😎

The Nats ought to prevail tonight.

peter wood's avatar

I must have jinxed them tonight!

Friend of mine called this morning, told me he had an extra ticket so what I like to join him on Wednesday.

Of course!

And about an hour ago, my wife said, "Don't forget we have a ball game tomorrow night."

So I'm trying to see if it's possible to overdose on Nats baseball.

Bernie Gilbert's avatar

WOULD I like to join him on Wednesday...

gonatsgo1's avatar

Yeah, I'll be there Wednesday with some guys from my spring training group. Weather looks fabulous for afternoon baseball. Retired R Us.

Go4Ridgeback's avatar

This is the type of game a good manager and coaching staff acknowledge as a potential “let down” game after a bunch of games against premier opponents. (The Nats obviously shouldn’t look down on anyone.) They've, of course, already shown signs of being a great staff, but I'll be curious to see how BB & the Analytics handle this.

Dave Nemec's avatar

Sweep the Fish! At least take 2 of 3.

Mark Zuckerman's avatar

And we are underway on a very pleasant, 77-degree Monday evening in D.C.

gonatsgo1's avatar

An early challenge for Cavalli. 2nd and 3rd and one out.

Edit: And now loaded.

LEE MCDOWELL's avatar

Ugh, just ugh. Gets the K then THIS.

Mark Zuckerman's avatar

Three walks issued by Cade Cavalli in the top of the 1st, one of them coming with the bases loaded. Had only walked 3 batters his last 3 starts combined.

Anthony's avatar

Damage limited, thankfully. But 24 pitches.
