Not good on the bullpen. Any updates on Jake Irvin? I saw he threw a bullpen? I'd be fine with adding him back in the bullpen when he's available.

I guess moving Garcia down in the order is a matchup thing?

Parker was looking elite in that outing until the injury happened. Night and day after. Awful to see.

Guessing a lot of hem and haw will be done of Chappy batting 2nd. Guessing it’s a pre-move to protect Wood with Lile if/when a righty arm comes in. Three left handers this series, finishing with Tolle. Garcia probably getting the benefit of the doubt so he doesn’t go cold on the bench.

Hope Palmquist and Cornelio are ready to contribute as pitching call ups

Luis Garcia Jr. NL POW!

Well-deserved. He is one of the reasons, maybe THE reason, they won the Orioles series.

As he should be; he's on a roll.

I’m glad Mitch was able to get back on the mound a few times after “that game”.

I'm surprised to see Wood in LF when he's more comfortable (seems to me) in RF. Something to do with Fenway? I've never been there, so I wouldn't know. I'm sure Butera has his reasons, so I'll trust the skipper.

Win the opener, fellas! Go, Nats!!

They seem to move him over when Lile isn’t starting.

Susan H aka pitchingfan's avatar

You're right, but why not move Crews? Mark has suggested on the Nats Chat podcasts that Crews is probably more "adaptable". Again, I'm sure there are reasons of which I am unaware. (Annoying that Butera & Co. don't tell me everything. LOL)

Right field is huge. Left is small. But the wall is tricky.

Exactly, although learning to play the Green Monster is not an easy task. Ball over his head get ready to play the bounce.

Bernie Gilbert's avatar

Ted Williams played his entire career in left. Red Sox fans found him to be less than an enthusiastic fielder, sometimes working on his swing instead of concentrating on the batter.

Wood is a better fielder now than he was last year, but Crews is the better man to have in right.

Bernie Gilbert's avatar

Plus, Wood is tall, so he can reach over the Green Monster, rob the Sawx of a home run or two...

Mark's avatar

Mikolas is determined not to let any balls get in play to Wood. Just all over the wall.

Martin Niland's avatar

I think it has to do with the amount of ground Crews can cover in that expansive right field at

Fenway.

Why not let Palmquist open tonight? He did a great job opening for Mikolas vs Phillies.

Dave Nemec's avatar

Only 2 lefties available in the bullpen tonight (Poulin is not - he pitched 2 days in a row). Doesn't want to use one as an opener and only have 1 LHP left.

Guessing Cornelio is the long man behind Mikolas tonight.

I don’t wish injuries on anyone, but I can’t say I’m upset to see both Lovelady and Parker off the roster. Wonder if their replacements will be any better.

Part of me wants to just defer to Blake on Chapparro batting 2nd and Luis batting 7th but the larger part just wants to scream WTF? James in left and Crews in right I do get, as james probably has more games in left than Dylan. And right is a position in Fenway where the better fielder and arm can make a difference …

Dave Nemec's avatar

Here's my 2 cents: they load the top of the order with RHB (other than Wood), and then when a RH reliever comes in, they've got Louie, Naz, Ruiz, and Wood all in a row, with Lile waiting to PH for Chaparro.

John walker's avatar

I certainly understand that, but will cost Luis an AB and I’d rather have that AB now right or left. I do also think Luis deserves the same chance Mead has to show he can now hit guys who throw with the same arm as he hits…
