I’m not mad at this. Nationals were getting solid contact, Cardinals middle infield was just that much better. On to the next one.

McGreevy also did a pretty good job pitching.

The pride of Cal Poly SLO. Go Mustangs!

The Notable on the number of pitches is amazingly ridiculous.

The day off tomorrow is probably a good thing. I got the sense that they might have been pressing today, position players and pitchers. A chance to regroup and a change of venue may be just what they need to get back to winning.

Brewers and then Pirates could prove to be a tough trip. Hopefully the offense gets back in track. Who knows about the 🐂🖋, but I'll be interested to see how it plays out.

Indeed. Who knows? The Nats may pleasantly surprise us, just as they did in Chicago.

Mikolas was signed to mentor the young pitchers( see bullpen results) and eat innings. He must be eating off the small plates menu and have indigestion. He’s certainly giving it to me.

Nats Fan in Exile's avatar

But sadly he is not even eating innings. Especially since he apparently cannot be trusted more than 2x through the order.

Not even twice. Pulled today before they came to bat a second time.

only relatively speaking was the starting pitcher performance decent today. He managed not to get slaughtered in just 3 innings with a WHIP of 2.66.

I need Harry Ford to start picking things up at AAA, the Keibert/Millas tandem just isn’t it.

Alvarez needs to take this spot.

I'm not sure why you yank Mikolas so quickly in this start after letting him stay out there and get hammered in the last one. But then again, I don't have to try to make the most of that bullpen. I also can't really explain why they brought Mikolas in in the first place.

It'll be a moot point in a few weeks. Going to be that kind of year, especially with the pitching staff.

The announcers are getting tired.

“Nasim Nuñez has now started 10 of the Nationals’ first 12 games. There’s no doubt he has been handed the starting second baseman’s job, by virtue of his elite defensive skills. But for this to continue long-term, the team eventually is going to need to see more offense from him. With an 0-for-4 showing today, Nuñez (who was actually batting sixth in the lineup), fell to 7-for-39 with zero extra-base hits on the season. He has drawn three walks, and he leads the majors with seven stolen bases. But he’s simply not getting on base enough to use his speed to maximum effect.”

Maybe. But Butera and Kilambi came from the Rays who value elite defense over batting. According to AI: the Tampa Bay Rays place an extremely high value on elite defensive players. They prioritize run prevention through skilled fielding, range, and precise positioning to maximize their "market inefficiency" approach, often overlooking offensive shortcomings in key positions to secure better defense.

So far this season the Rays are starting Taylor Walls over Carson Williams. Nasim Nunez is a far superior offensive player over Taylor Walls. Carson Williams may develop into an offensive threat but so far he seems to be a defense first SS.
