This bullpen is so disappointing

Andrew Cain's avatar

If the brass wants to create a culture of accountability then Toboni, Kilambi and Butera must take responsibility for creating this Dumpster fire of a bullpen and fix it.

Blame lies at the feet of the Lerners. You can make a decent bullpen without appropriate funding.

I would have liked to have seen Lord at some point tonight.

This offense scoring 6 runs a game is pretty cool though

Travis McGavin's avatar

He needs to pitch tomorrow when Mikolas is pulled in the second inning

Geordie Keitt's avatar

Remember when the Nats were two games over 500? Good times

Jonathan Ruddo's avatar

anybody checked up on Colin Poche lately? what about Lucas Sims?

JJJ's avatar

How about Barraclough and Rosenthal?

Bill S formerly dclivejazz's avatar

Loved Fernando Rodney myself. Wish that guy was still around…Joe Ross, Austin Voth and Lucas Giolito are still available tho

ongoingchrisis's avatar

Last time I checked, Rodney was mounting a comeback bid...

Travis McGavin's avatar

Good news: Mikolas pitches tomorrow. There won’t be a lead to blow

Jonathan Ruddo's avatar

imagine my dismay when I realized Mikolas was going to pitch my first game at nats park this year :(

Travis McGavin's avatar

Our offense is fun to watch

Bill S formerly dclivejazz's avatar

He’s pitching against his old team. Maybe he’ll rise to the occasion.

Brian Johnson's avatar

They might be 1-6 in the last 7 but damn if they’re not fun to watch. Feels like a team that is growing without feeling too much pressure. Yes, bullpen stinks, but W/L not really the point. Just keep hitting

Frankenhoff John's avatar

The O has been remarkable, especially considering the spring training woes.

I guess my actions would reveal that I agree with you (I've watched every game so far)).

But man... these games are LONG. I don't mind seeing so many Nats working counts and getting on base, but add to that a pitching staff that can't go deep, falls behind, walks batters all night . . . You end up with the return of the 3 hour baseball game, something I did not miss!

ongoingchrisis's avatar

Are there any veteran relievers floating around who we could bring in on a minor league deal? We desperately need an Andrew Chafin type to steady this pen.

Andrew Cain's avatar

Jesse Orosco is available. Yes, he’s 68, but he’d probably be an improvement.

If CJ doesn't make the error in the 1st on a sure dp ball they win

baseball-birthdays's avatar

nah, the bullpen would've just had to give up a few more runs... they're capable :)

Tegwar's avatar

I think the 10 walks had a little more to do with the loss.

DCSportsfan63's avatar

The bullpen stunk but CJ’s error led to two runs

baseball-birthdays's avatar

And CJ's hitting had just a bit to do with why they had a lead for the bullpen to protect

DCSportsfan63's avatar

That’s true but it’s his fielding that’s been the problem… on routine plays

baseball-birthdays's avatar

not arguing that... but CJ does make more than a few positive contributions, and he's nowhere close to the main reason this game went in the loss column.

if he keeps hitting he won't be around after late July, anyhow...

DCSportsfan63's avatar

He’s a very good hitter and he’d be a complete player if he could field . Nunez should be at SS but they’re showcasing Abrams at short so they get better trade value . I like him but his sub par fielding hurts the team

ongoingchrisis's avatar

He's exciting to watch but I think he's gone in a few months. Too inconsistent, doesn't play "locked in"

Natty Bumppo's avatar

Coaching staff will lose the locker room by the end of April if this BP performance keeps up and it will keep up because there is nothing they can do about. They went through all of Spring Training and this is what they broke camp with? What were they looking at for 2 months?.....blown leads by committee. No worries though, we have Mikolas going tomorrow to take the series.

Another Nats season, another incompetent bullpen. Smh

McMerc7MHDC's avatar

This team should be .500, at worst.

I’m more alarmed by the starters not being able to put up more than 5 innings than I am the bullpen blowing leads.

So frustrating for a young, scrappy lineup doing its part and a front office/ manager that are pushing almost every correct button with that unique lineup construction day in and day out. Scored 5+ in all 6 games this month and 9 of 11 this season with 2-hole hitters like Andres Chaparro and Curtis Mead flashing, yet have a 4-7 record to show for it.

Would rather it be the young future holding up its end and the waiver add bullpen vets letting them down than the alternative, at least

Bill S formerly dclivejazz's avatar

Butera looked like somebody garroted his puppy in the postgame presser. He seemed a little stumped about the BP but is clearly cogitating about it.

Susan V's avatar

I was driving home from the game so only heard him on the radio but he sounded really flummoxed.

Brandon Persinger's avatar

I can live if they give up home runs. I can live if they give up hits. I can't stand all the walks. This pitching staff is giving too much away for free.

ongoingchrisis's avatar

Butera said the walks were unacceptable in the post game, it's the first thing he said. So there's that, at least.

There's something grimly ironic about George Soriano pitching two perfect innings against the Nats while Andre Granillo is back in Rochester.

Somebody please explain to me why Soriano and Drew Smith were not deemed worth keeping.
