In years past, the opposition didn’t necessarily need to bring their “A game” to beat the Nats. Not this year. Depending on who is the starting pitcher, you have to play well to beat Washington.
I want to give Joey Wiemer and Curtis Mead a particular shout out. There’s a scenario out there where this team struggles mightily against lefties due to the natural handedness of the lineup, but these two guys who got picked up off the scrap heap put a stop to that nonsense before it even began. It’s been huge.
The Nats are playing good baseball as long as they get good starting pitching, and the Mets just aren’t hitting at all. If that continues, Washington should be able to keep the pressure on. Tomorrow's challenge is Freddy Peralta, he’s a real pitcher, not someone you luck into runs against. Washington will need to stay hot at the plate.
How many runs do you “luck into” when you score 14? There were 2 gifts in the bases loaded walk and HBP, but I think the Nats hitters, surprisingly, dominated Mets pitching tonight. Peterson has absolutely owned the Nats until tonight and Manea is no slouch (though off to a rough start as are a lot of the Mets players).
But, yes, Peralta is tough and the DC boys have Mikolas….so, advantage Mets tomorrow, but I’m sure going to enjoy tonight’s win. It’s nice to get a blowout win for the good guys every now and then!
I’m with you, the Nats earned this one. The hitters went up there with a plan, and it showed with 15 hits. Alvarez had that passed ball too, but overall the Nats’ lineup did its job. When they get solid starting pitching, like tonight, they play good baseball, no errors, everyone chipping in, and the runs follow, just like they have most of the season.
The Mets are struggling, but that’s not Washington’s problem. Peterson hasn’t been sharp this year, and Peralta, even if he hasn’t been quite as dominant so far, is still a dominant pitcher. So yeah, I agree: it’s tough to tell how much is the Nats playing well and how much is the Mets playing poorly, probably a mix of both.
Every minute of that was beautiful. And I’m not gonna lie, if he isn’t fired before tomorrow I legit can’t see Carlos Mendoza keeping his job after tomorrow.
Very very impressive win after last night. Since I’m ever the pessimist it would be nice to get Lile going. Ruiz going 0-5 doesn’t bother or surprise me anymore. Cavalli and DJ Hertz or however you spell it in September. Edwards, who we had for 2 years, looked good for the mutts.
Curtis Mead is an interesting player. He came out of the Rays system, so there’s at least some shared history with Toboni. He hasn’t played enough to know exactly what he is yet, but a 25 year‑old who can handle third, second, and first and shows a little pop should have a place, at minimum, as a useful bench piece. He’s the same age as Crews, and if Crews had 4 homers in 62 at bats people would be throwing a parade. Maybe it ends up being nothing, but it’s worth seeing how Mead looks over the rest of the year.
Cavalli becoming a long-term member of the rotation would be so huge to help bridge the pitching staff into the next contention era, whenever that comes. Has the talent for it. Encouraging couple of outings.
James Wood hit that 7th inning double so hard it went between the outfielders and hit the wall. Wasn’t a grounder, but it bounced a couple times on the outfield grass. 99 times out of 100 an outfielder can cut that off before it gets to the wall, but Wood just hits the ball so hard. It’s exceptional.
Way to bounce back boys!! Great win! Another Curly W is in the books!
Great turn-around guys!!

ex-National Ildemaro Vargas (now with Arizona) has a 22 game hitting streak going...
Always liked Ildemaro. Always will.

Great to see the offense peak out again, but what really makes my heart go pitter patter is Cavalli’s last two outings! Wow!

I’ll tell you this much: Miles Mikolas, and definitely Zach Littell, are both pitchers you luck into runs against 😩

He might well be the fall guy, but Carlos didn't assemble the weak roster.
Agreed but some of game management decisions are absolutely MIND BOGGLING as a baseball fan.

Congrats to Cavalli on picking up his first W of the season.

So happy for Brady! He’s been struggling at the plate lately. Hope the Slam boosts his confidence and helps him straighten things out.

“Max Scherzer (20 instances)” lmao I miss Max
Nice to beat up on the Mets!
My good buddy is a NYer and Mets fan and he wants us to beat his team so they’ll fire the manager 😂

I like it. Seeing the offense get on track was great.
Hopefully Mikolas isn’t throwing beach balls tomorrow. Would love another road series win.
