A Curly W is in the books! Go Nats!

Shawn Brown's avatar

Zuckerman was quick with this one. The email came in before I saw the final out.

Jim McNamee's avatar

You might even say...instant!

Brian A.'s avatar

I got the alert on my phone for this article before the game ended on nationals.tv....impressive

Perhaps Kiebert was simply over used by Davy. In a platoon role, he might surprise us, let's hope so.

Connie Sorrentino's avatar

I think you are right about overuse of Kiebert. Platooning with Milas should keep him fresh.

Solid pitching is just what the Doctor ordered

nebco66's avatar

I'm looking forward to seeing the new guy tomorrow. If he is solid, we can really lean into hope for this season.

Max Patkin's avatar

I'll probably need more than 4 games to "lean into hope"!! I'll probably need more than 40 games. 😉

nebco66's avatar

Yeah, I get that. I'm going on intuition, a gut feeling. I do think the Nats are going to surprise. Just a hunch. Imagine being a Cubs fan. "What just happened to us?"

Max Patkin's avatar

Cubs fans are way more knowledgeable than that. Any fan worried on Opening weekend is not a serious fan.

If the Nats are within spitting distance of .500 on May 1, we should all be happy. Sweating the day to day this early in the season is a recipe for disappointment. For now we should just hope for improvement every day.

nebco66's avatar

Yup on all counts. Especially looking for improvement day to day.

I loved Tim Foli, so I am here to spell his name correctly

Bob's avatar

Tim Foli ended his career in 1985. Mark meant to say Tom Foley, who the Expos acquired from the Phillies in July 1986.

Greg10ike's avatar

I was a Tim Foli fan, too. He was a fiery shortstop for the Expos from 1972-77. The player who Mark references sharing the former franchise record was Tom Foley in 1986.

Won our first series and did it against a contender. A lot to like. My only grouch is our defense. The bullpen, on the other hand, looks pretty sturdy. Super start to the season.

BassMan's avatar

I agree about our defense. I hope Gavin Fein rips it up at Rochester so he can stabilize 1st base. It's our major weakness.

Max Patkin's avatar

Hmmm. I don't think we'll see Fein until 2028 at the earliest.

Matt Goldstein's avatar

So much to work on in the field defensively, but overall, how can you be upset with this result? Butera and the Natalytics (new band name) are showing me something in the SMALLEST of sample sizes. On to Philly!!!

So do we now start to hear how much the Yankees want Joey Wiemer

gonatsgo1's avatar

2 of 3 at the Friendly Confines!

On to Philly for 3.

DelmarvaNatitude's avatar

Now let's try to do the same thing in the Philthy Confines.

Butera has shown faith in Weimer - look what he is doing.

Butera showed faith in Irving today - look what he did.

'Ya gotta have faith!" I do. Go, Nats!!

I subscribed to nationals.tv and can watch the games on my Kindle tablet. But I can't figure our how to get channel 579 on my TV. The channel says I have to subscribe with Verizon. Anyone else having this problem? I have Verizon Extreme plan which should include this channel. I used to see the games via MASN which doesn't exist anymore. Guess I have to call Verizon unless anyone has a better idea.

gonatsgo1's avatar

You may have seen the reporting on this. Verizon Fios is definitely the platform with the most issues.

Not an expert, but I think the Extreme package should include the Nats (somebody posted about this the other day).

Two thoughts: 1) have you rebooted your system? and 2) yeah, may have to call them.

Good luck.

Connie Sorrentino's avatar

I tried the reboot to no avail. Will call Verizon tomorrow and report back for anyone else having same issue. Hope to be watching Nats- Phillies tomorrow.

Kpd's avatar

Call them tomorrow and just say you want to get 579. (Don't explain anything, they have a new script and will know what you mean.) They are going to say you need to update to the Ultimate package. Tell them you don't want to pay more. Can they find a discount? They will probably search and search, probably tell you some other Verizon product has a discount. Ask them to look for a discount for you, they will probably miraculously find a discount and give you the Ultimate package

Connie Sorrentino's avatar

Great advice. I will give it a try. Thank you.

Janet Conrad's avatar

I had the same problem on opening day. When it said I needed to subscribe, I pressed either Info or the "enter" button (I don't remember which) and it took me to another screen. I don't remember what that screen said but I switched to another channel for a few minutes. When I went back to 579 it said I was subscribed but my set top box needed to be rebooted. After reboot, I had access.

Connie Sorrentino's avatar

Thanks for your note, Janet. I saw the same as you did about need to subscribe, but then it told me to call Verizon. That's good news that you're now able to watch the Nats on Verizon. I rebooted, but it didn't help. I'll try rebooting again.

Janet Conrad's avatar

I left it on that screen when I switched channels for about 5-10 minutes. Then when I went back it told me about rebooting.

Jay Bryant's avatar

Get DirecTV. That's what I did in 2009 when I moved to NC, which is still in the Nats home area. The local cable here couldn't cut a deal with MASN (sound familiar? except here they never did) so I simply switched to DirecTV and have watched virtually every Nats game since. New channel is 641, the old MASN backup channel.

Connie Sorrentino's avatar

If my call go Verizon doesn't work, I may try your option of DirecTV. Thank you.

Stephen Boggs-Puckett's avatar

Did anyone else notice during Butera’s post game on nats.tv that you could see the network and log in password info for the Wrigley WiFi network on the whiteboard next to him? Kinda funny.

CBinDC's avatar

Well Soto was surprise call up and the rest is history so is Wiemer the SURPRISE waver pickup with a game play to start with a team record that goes back to 1962 I hear

CBinDC's avatar

I say this all the time The Nationals are NOTHING to the MLB Media universe they hardly exist and right now you look at the MLB Site and the news rundown is Cubs hit Two Home Runs Nothing about Wiemer or the Nats or taking 2 of 3

Brandon Persinger's avatar

In terms of sports media coverage and fan interest, the Cubs outstrip the Nationals. The have a larger national fanbase, they have existed as the Cubs for FAR longer, they have actually played good baseball in recent seasons, and have a larger sports media influence. Plus they are viewed as a contender this year. I am 100% not surprised any national headline is telling the story from Cubs perspective.

CBinDC's avatar

The issue is that the Nationals get NO ATTENTION just saw the MLB Rundown show and the Game story was Bergman hits two HR's oh yeah Wiemer was nice BUT did we say the Cubs hit 3 HR's no other team regardless of record history or fanbase is as badly treated as the Nationals and find the idea that Nats fans are just so much trash an insult

dennis703's avatar

"There's no need to fear, Underdog is here!"

NME's avatar

That's going to happen. Media outlets are going to play to their general audience and the Nats do not have a national draw. If you arent a contending team picking up a bandwagon following or a historical team that's been around for more than a century, you are not going to get national media love.

DelmarvaNatitude's avatar

We can't even get the local rag to give any local teams any love, I guess we shouldn't expect any from any of the national media either.

GLH aka NatsFan4Ever's avatar

👎 You mean like the perspective that they lost 2 of 3 to open the season against the lowly Washington Nationals?
