Better stop the chatter about Abrams being traded. Now, if Crews was the hitter we all hope he will be, it would be a tougher decision. But he just looks lost at the plate.
The Nationals bullpen shutting down a game at Coors Field may be the biggest reverse lock of the season. After all the late inning collapses, Riley Cornelio, Matt Krook and Tom Cosgrove combined for 4 2/3 hitless innings, and Cosgrove needed only 10 pitches to get the final six outs. Baseball makes no sense sometimes.
I feel like CJ's season is almost a little taken for granted at this point with him having shown it in the first half prior and Wood's dominance overshadowing him a little. But it was never a given that this guy was going to figure out the way he has, and we should give him his flowers in having become a real star of the game. That homer he hit tonight was pretty nutty on a ball well below the strike zone
Posted this in the other thread but it bears repeating: Nats broke the tie with Yankees and now lead MLB in dingers by one and NL by 15 (Braves #2). And of course remain on top in runs scored!
I don't know the answer to the question of whether Chaparro is part of their long term plan. But if he isn't, then maybe move him at the deadline to someone who needs a power bat while he is still hot?
Memo to Freeland: if you want to pick a fight with a National, maybe not the smartest move to bark at Chaparro who is built like a tank and could break you over his knee with one arm. But honestly, one step on the back of the mound?
With Mikolas due up tomorrow this was an opportune time to find a way to win. And has been said already - many contributors at bat and on the mound. But just saw the postgame interview with Cornelio who was probably a little camera shy but couldn’t have been more grateful to use his time in front of the camera to acknowledge his close friends, family, and especially Father who have supported him and were there to see him get his first MLB win. Most of the time we don’t know much about the low profile players who are hanging on to a short window of opportunity to show they can contribute. It was so nice to see that moment and what it meant to him.
No, no, the games not over yet, we haven’t had a bullpen stress test in the 8th or 9th inning.

Suddenly the Marlins have lost seven in a row and the Nats are just a game behind them, not to mention a game-and-a-half out of the wild card.

As mad as we are with the front office about the bullpen, I think we have to give credit where credit is due. Cosgrove is GOOD!
He and Krook so composed which allowed them to execute well.
Part of me is glad Krook got a second chance. I feel like he got set up for failure against the Yankees.
