Another Curly W is in the books! Dang this team is fun!

BassMan's avatar

I'm really happy for Alverez, JY, CJ, and Nunez. Terrific game, some nice defense as well.

baseball-birthdays's avatar

interesting that there were no ABS challenges until the 8th... plate umpire was calling a make-it-up-as-you-go strike zone

Chris's avatar

That's another Curly W in the books!

PAUL HOPPENJANS's avatar

Fantastic that you publish the instant analyses dawn near immediately, Mark

PAUL HOPPENJANS's avatar

“Darn” near immediately

peter wood's avatar

Yes, thanks mucho Mark!!

John walker's avatar

Suddenly, the line-up is really LONG…

Tegwar's avatar

It really is especially if Ruiz keeps hitting.

Travis McGavin's avatar

Keibert’s OPS is good; and I mean actually good not good-for-Keibert good

Mark D.'s avatar

Nice curly W. Soto had a big night, but his team lost which I’m sure is fine with him. He probably doesn’t even keep track of the score.

Really impressed with the way the new regime handles pitching.

baseball-birthdays's avatar

"(...) but his team lost which I’m sure is fine with him."

why, exactly, do you believe this?

kevin@kevinrusch.com's avatar

He made it pretty clear over the last couple of years that the paycheck is his first, second, and third priority.

baseball-birthdays's avatar

which, of course, automatically means he doesn't care about winning or losing?

SMH

peter wood's avatar

That is obvious to many of us fans.

baseball-birthdays's avatar

dunno if that's intended seriously or sarcastically...

Mark D.'s avatar

He left a NY team that made the World Series for an extra $5M from the less competitive other NY team.

No hate; I’m glad we had him before Boras turned him into a me-first money-focused individual.

baseball-birthdays's avatar

"I’m glad we had him before Boras turned him into a me-first money-focused individual."

And you know this how?

You just feel entitled to slander him, why, exactly?

peter wood's avatar

I guess you don't watch that much baseball. Many of us have loonnnggg memories:))

baseball-birthdays's avatar

how, exactly, is this responsive?

would you like to make some effort at making sense instead of just belching out some weird knee-jerk negativity.

peter wood's avatar

Sorry. I'm a baseball "lifer" and an expert in reading body language, having lived in 9 different cultures.

Mark D.'s avatar

Is this your whole schtick? It’s pretty boring

baseball-birthdays's avatar

if you're replying to me (you seem to be unable to quote), I'll repeat:

And you know this how?

You just feel entitled to slander him, why, exactly?

Mark D.'s avatar

I gave you one example you didn’t address. You’re boring. Blocked.

JJJ's avatar

I'm just curious. Where does the hate of Soto come? He's a darn good baseball player and it was Nats who traded him. No shade. Just curious.

baseball-birthdays's avatar

I get a kick out of folks who pose and posture as though they'd turn down top dollar for whatever it is that they do.

Juan Soto is a fabulous hitter and deserves what the market will pay him, jealous internet commenters notwithstanding.

peter wood's avatar

Yes, he is a good player, but it is clear his main interest is making $$$.

baseball-birthdays's avatar

"Yes, he is a good player, but it is clear his main interest is making $$$."

He's a freaking great player, and you have absolutely no idea what his main interest may or may not be.

He's a generational player and if he wants to play for the Nationals I'll let him return as the prodigal son.

dcNatz's avatar

I don’t hate him. I just elect not to cheer for him anymore. I don’t wish them ill will, but I don’t feel the need to cheer for any former Nat.

baseball-birthdays's avatar

perfectly reasonable, and I won't argue...

my issue is with folks who claim to know what does and doesn't motivate any given player.

Tim K's avatar

Great save for Alvarez, keep him at this level

peter wood's avatar

Yes, Alvarez is a KEEPER:))

Bill Bates's avatar

Let’s not lose sight of the really good defense tonight, especially Nunez.

Tegwar's avatar

Nunez manifested a run off a walk and made the Mets throw the ball away. He also made a few spectacular play in in the field with two key double plays. Also don't forget the squeeze. I know people love to see a higher batting average but that's not his game and I'm fine with that. The defense up the middle on this team is the best it's been in 6 years.

Tegwar's avatar

Games like this make it a lot easier to believe this team’s offense might be for real. The starting pitching still feels a little shaky, but the defense is clearly getting better, and the bullpen usage has been very good.

With Clayton Beeter coming back, and with Butera spreading the innings around, most of the relievers aren’t getting overworked, except maybe Lord, who has been excellent. I think I’ll just enjoy it while it lasts.

Ron L's avatar

Worthy of appreciation: all the run scoring, incredible defense by Young and Nunez, the whole being greater than the sum of the parts night in /night out.

But we 🤞🤞 and sometimes hold our nose at our starting pitching and overall defense.

Ending on a positive? Big Kudos to the under recognized work of our middle relievers who can 3 (or more!!) innings. Well done Lord, Parker, and Alvarez.

peter wood's avatar

Yes, those 3 have turned into very valuable BP pieces.

Isn’t it interesting that Matt Borgschulte’s tenure in Baltimore completely redefined the Orioles' offense. He moved them from a bottom-tier, rebuilding team into one of the most feared lineups in baseball. And then look what happened to the O’s after he left. And now he’s replicating that in DC. Enjoy him while we can…..he’ll be a manager someplace else within a year or two.

Love his philosophy of “owning” the zone.

Dave Nemec's avatar

Not saying I disagree with you, but for years Kevin Long was always pushed as a future manager, while being one of the best hitting coaches in MLB. For whatever reason(s), he's still a hitting coach.

I just hope if Borgschulte gets a manager gig, that any of his assistants left behind continue his methods.

peter wood's avatar

He is one helluva hitting coach!

Ron L's avatar

Ok, not under recognized…Dave and Charlie deep diving on the 3 long-men relievers on the post game!!👍

Harold dorfman's avatar

How does the Mets manager keep his job? Did anyone else wonder why he got Manaya hot in the bottom of the eighth. I couldn’t figure that out based on where we were in the lineup, game situation etc. bullpen had to be tired

dcNatz's avatar

Mets fans are certainly not happy with him.

Harold dorfman's avatar

They shouldn’t be. The Mets play so sloppy

Harold dorfman's avatar

Two outs, bases empty, I’d walk Soto in this lineup

John walker's avatar

I thought for sure Mendoza was a goner when the Nats took 2 of 3 at CitiField, after the Mets had gotten swept at home by the Rockies. Maybe he should’ve been…

Harold dorfman's avatar

Yes he should have been

peter wood's avatar

Maybe "Manaya" was just doing some bullpen work.

Michael Matthews's avatar

I love tuning in these days. Just knowing this team won’t roll over and, seemingly, has a chance every night makes it so fun to be a fan again.

peter wood's avatar

Me too. The Nats just might be buyers at the deadline, for more pitching. Their offense is simply amazing.

Steve's avatar

It was a great game and I’m so happy for Alvarez getting a save tonight with a magnificent performance.

But….I’m just going to enjoy the wins day-to-day…the trading deadline is many games and many days away and a lot can change………

Remember a 19-31 team winning the World Series just a few years ago? :-)
