I’ve been thinking about yesterday’s frustrating game and while listening to the pod this morning an extra layer of frustration started creeping in. Are we seeing some consequences of over-managing by Butera? It’s a hindsight “gotcha” sort of point but I don’t think Luis makes the same mistake Mead made, for example.
On the other hand bringing House in did work, so who knows. Just feels like there’s a heck of a lot of shuffling the deck in-game and maybe it’s a bit much for these young players.
Good point on Mead trying to turn and peek at the ball. That, and the coming in standing, easily cost him the out at 3rd. Mere seconds make the difference.
You’ve covered all the gaffs that led to the loss. My concern is that if Butera and his coaching staff discuss and dissect the mistakes (base running, getting picked off, etc), then why are the same mistakes continue to happen? Players don’t appear to be

Other point worth mentioning is that as good we would like to think Cavalli can be, he simply doesn’t appear to be who we want him to be. Cavalli is
Probably the best we got, but he has ‘t been an ace like we want to treat him. Pulling for him big time though because he has the talent to be “that guy” and has work hard to get this chance.
Cavalli needs to reduce the number of pitches per batter. If he’s going to average 19 pitches per inning, he’s going to be hard-pressed to complete more than 5 innings.
I want him to be the staff ace, but with his high pitch counts, I keep thinking he may eventually end up in the bullpen as a closer.

Alvarez being called up. I look for him to take over for Mikolas after 2-3 innings unless the latter shows something more than what he has to date.
