In his return to the major leagues after a two-month demotion to Triple-A, Dylan Crews was mostly an afterthought. He went 1-for-4 with an infield single. He played eight innings in center field, then shifted to right field for the top of the ninth. He was just another guy in a Nationals uniform.

Which is exactly how the team wants it.

“One of the biggest messages I sent to him was: Our offense is really good. And that is great for him and others,” president of baseball operations Paul Toboni said this afternoon. “I think there’s often this feeling when you’re called up, you’ve got to be the savior. He doesn’t. He can just be Dylan Crews, and that’s a really good player.”

Toboni said this during a pregame session with reporters that began around 3 p.m. Some seven hours later, Crews was doling out high-fives and handshakes with his teammates, having finally seen firsthand what everyone else has seen over the course of 49 games this season: The Nats offense really is good.
