It was a really rough stretch that saw a team one game out of a wild card spot and looking like buyers turn, in an astonishing short amount of time, into sellers after a disastrous 2-9 stretch. Gone were Mead, Garcia Jr., and Griffin, followed by Wood to the IL.
It would have been so easy for the Nats to have mailed it in and called it a season, as I'm sure many a fan was tempted to do. But nothing doing. These past two games may have been their most impressive picking themselves off the floor and competing effort in a season full of them.
They are still a special team, even though I can't keep track who exactly is in the bullpen these days.
Got to see this one in person; what an atmosphere. Nats fans packing the park, enjoying the game, giving Alvarez a proper applause on his exit. The buzz growing in the breakout inning. Excited for the next seasons of Nats baseball if they can keep this engine chugging.
I know it is fanciful and bordering on silly, but the Nats are not eliminated from contention and the none of the teams between them and the last wildcard position are exactly setting the world on fire. So the three games against the cubs next week ... That could be enlightening.
No need to harp too much on lowlights after a good game, but really boiled my blood to see Vivas burn two challenges in the same AB. Lowest success rate (17%) on the team besides Millas who’s challenged once (and got it wrong).
With no options left, paltry offensive showings, only slightly above average defense, and bad arm strength, I cannot see him being a part of the future. I get it, he’s a super utility player, expectations are tempered on offensive output. But, it’s hard not to think that other guys within the org might be better suited for his 40-man spot.
Great to see Nats momentum swinging to winning at home. Could not have happened at a better time.

Great game, but I'm curious why Beeter gets the win. Cruz also pitched a scoreless inning when the Nats had the lead. I'm just not clear on the rules.
Score keeper's discretion... Cruz must have been deemed less effective than Beeter, having loaded the bases before getting out of it.

Gotta admit, I don't dislike Kolko at all, but I am really enjoying Severino's play by play.
