SAN FRANCISCO – As CJ Abrams stepped to the plate in the top of the ninth Monday night, the Nationals trailing the Giants by two runs but two runners now in scoring position, the entire dugout had the same thought: Who else would you rather have up in that moment?

“I mean, pretty confident,” outfielder Daylen Lile said. “He’s on a heater right now. For him to come through, we’ve seen CJ do that 1,000 times. It’s nothing new to us.”

So what transpired in that moment – Abrams’ two-run single to tie the game, followed a few minutes later by Lile’s two-out single to take the lead and ultimately send the Nats to a 4-3 victory – felt both exhilarating and entirely expected.

James Wood may be the best power hitter on the team. But Abrams is the best clutch hitter right now, and it’s not even up for debate.
